We value our deep relationships with the educational clients we represent. Our experience representing educational organizations allows us to recognize and address the unique issues confronting schools, while drawing on the expertise of the attorneys in our Corporate and Real Estate, Labor & Employment, and Litigation Practice Groups to provide comprehensive legal services to our school clients. Those services range from corporate transactional and governance matters to employment issues, to matters involving the relationships among schools, students, and parents.
Our experience in transactional and governance matters includes representing schools in complex multi-party tax exempt financings and assisting clients in organization formation and tax exempt status matters. We also provide guidance to boards of directors on governance issues; represent clients in obtaining traditional financing; assist with real estate acquisitions, leases, and construction-related matters; and prepare and review a wide range of contracts, including service, employment, and intellectual property agreements.
We also assist educational clients on employment matters. We advise clients on compliance with federal, state and local laws, including laws addressing workplace discrimination, leaves, workplace safety, and wage and hour laws. We help clients develop policies, handbooks and forms, negotiate employment agreements, and conduct trainings on sexual harassment and other employment law issues. When employment disputes do arise, we represent schools in connection with administrative proceedings, complaints, and lawsuits.
Maintaining effective relationships with students and parents is critical for our educational clients. We provide advice on student discipline issues, privacy laws, compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and mandatory reporting of suspected abuse. We also work with clients to develop enrollment agreements and student and parent handbooks.
In addition to these legal services, members of our firm have served on the boards of independent schools, universities and other educational organizations. This board service gives the firm a different perspective on the unique environment in which educational organizations operate.
